  • Historical Statistics on Prisoners in State and Federal institutions, Yearend 1925-1986: [United States]
Annual data on the size of the prison population and the size of the general population in the United States for 1925 to 1986. These year-end counts include tabulations for prisons in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as the federal prisons, and are intended to provide a measure of the overall size of the prison population.
  • 1978+ can be found in Statistical Abstract of the United States.
    • Search for "Prisoners Under Jurisdiction of Federal or State Correctional Authorities".   The table in PDF form will say 2000+ but click on Download and choose the Excel option and 1978+ is presented.
